Many small and family businesses know they need to market but have little or no money to do so. Sadly, many people use this as an excuse not to market. Even with a limited budget, you can still promote and increase visibility for yourself and your business.

The following three strategies have proven to be extremely effective for you in countless businesses as they can for you.

1. Press releases

Very effective and they give great credibility when published. You must have a written release that matches the media source you are submitting it to. You can distribute press releases both online and offline.

A quick Internet search for media sources in your city will bring up radio, TV, newspapers, and magazines in your area. To find online resources, search in “free online press release distribution”. More lists will appear. Make sure to use free services when on a limited budget.

There are services you can pay for if you are so inclined. Two great resources for both free and paid are www.prweb.com and http://arrivenet.com/.

Before writing a press release, determine the following:

Who is your target market?
What is your target media?
Who is the contact person at the media agency?
What is the timeframe for submission?
Do you have an attention-grabbing headline?
Do you know who, what, when, where, why, how?
Do you have a good quote, research, and technical date if applicable?

2. Articles

Writing articles is a great way to gain recognition as an expert in your particular field or industry. By providing practical information, you can reach the targeted audience. This can create exciting opportunities for you and your business.

Anything you write should be something you understand and your information is factual. Inaccurate or untrue information can come back to haunt you.

I recently read an article by someone claiming to be an Internet marketing expert. Their article is about increasing visibility online.

To find out the visibility of this so-called expert, I did a search for the author's name. The “expert” author has only 10 posts under his name. Not very impressive when other experts have thousands of listings. The author was immediately discredited.

3. Presentation

One of the extremely effective ways to market your product or service is to hold a free informational seminar. When you provide great information that interests your market, you become a resource before you are a supplier.

By positioning yourself as a resource, you are marketing in a very unique way.

Hosting a presentation can cost almost nothing. You might offer to make a presentation at a staff meeting for a client. Many large companies have the opportunity to talk over a brown bag lunch.

You can hold an open meeting with the public at your local library. Be sure to send out press releases to the local media when you present a public presentation.

Many associations, including your local Chamber of Commerce, are constantly on the lookout for presenters who can deliver timely and beneficial talks to their members.

When you apply one of the three recommendations to your marketing mix, you reap the benefits. When you apply all three the results can be extraordinary.

Another cons or downside to making your own YouTube videos is that strangers essentially know you.

The amount of information they collect about you will depend on the type of video you submit to YouTube.

For example, a stranger watching your YouTube video may learn more about you if you post a video blog than if you posted a comedy parody that you did with your friends.

That is why you should not only think about whether or not you want to post a video on YouTube, but you should also think about your safety. Keeping internet security in mind, such as not spreading too much personal information, is a great way to enjoy YouTube safely.

As you probably already know, you need to have a few items in order to upload videos to the YouTube website. If you plan to make videos for YouTube only, you will need to have a video recording device.

There are several devices that can be used, including camcorders, mobile phones, and webcams. You should also have movie editing software installed on your computer as it will allow you to review or even edit your YouTube videos before posting them.

If you have an older computer, you may need to purchase a movie editing software program, but many newer computers come with these types of programs already installed.

Although it may seem like there are a lot of downsides or downsides to making and sharing YouTube videos, there are actually a number of benefits to doing so as well. One of those benefits is that it is easy to do.

Once you have your video installed on your computer and edited, if you like, the uploading process is really easy. In fact, YouTube explains the upload process easily and step by step. Even if you don't have a lot of experience with using computers, you should be able to easily upload one of your videos to YouTube.

If you want to upload a video to YouTube, after carefully thinking about your decision to do so, you will need to sign up for YouTube for a free account.

This account will not only allow you to share your videos with the internet community, but it will also allow you to rate the videos you watch or even have online discussions with other YouTube members.

1. Calculate how much money you currently have sitting in bank accounts, investments, registered retirement savings plans, GIC's, real estate, etc. If you were to leave your job today, would there be any form of payout (ie. sick plan credit, pension plan contributions, unused holidays, anniversary pay, etc.)?

2. Determine how much you earn on a monthly basis either through employment, child support payments, rental properties, dividends, your existing home-based business, etc.

3. Record your monthly household expenses. Some examples to get you started are:

- mortgage/rent

- property tax/house and mortgage insurance

- utilities (heat/water/hydro)

- phone/cable/satellite/Internet

- yard maintenance/snow removal

- groceries and household supplies

- vehicle fuel, insurance and maintenance costs

- medical

- child care

- personal care (hair/nails/clothing)

- entertainment (movies/sports/books/plays)

- club memberships, publications, etc.

4. List your monthly business expenses, for example:

- Internet

- phone (separate business line)

- autoresponder

- shopping cart

- long distance

- bank fees

- office supplies

- tools

- web hosting

- marketing

- advertising

- part-time help

- coaching services

- shipping/postage, etc.

5. Identify your outstanding liabilities such as:

- credit card balances

- personal loans

- lines of credit, etc.

When you calculate your earnings and revenue on an annual basis and deduct your personal and business expenses. How much do you have remaining at the end of the year? Can a portion of this be put aside to build your financial cushion?

If your current business revenue isn't enough to cover your business and personal expenses and if you were to quit work today, how long would you be able to survive on your other revenue sources or savings and assets, taking into account your monthly expenses?

Have you considered all unexpected expenditures that could arise in the next year or two?

Is your car running on its last two cylinders?
Has your furnace almost reached its life expectancy?
Is your vacuum cleaner starting to growl at you?
Is your partner's job secure or do you foresee unstable times ahead?

This exercise is by no means intended to scare or discourage. Financial stability is an area that needs to be addressed so you can keep your feet firmly planted and plans realistic as you build your home-based business.

Understanding where you are and what potentially lies ahead will help you make sound financial decisions as you plan your future.

After completing these five steps, you may realize your dream to break free of your job might take a year longer than expected, or you may learn that in order to move forward at a quicker pace, you may have to bring in a partner or investor, or learn to leverage your time, money and effort more efficiently to expedite progress.
